Above all, Rebekah believes that ensuring quality education is the gateway to Michigan’s rebirth. It is with this belief in mind that she has consistently voted against cuts to K-12 and higher education, and continues to fight for a comprehensive budget solution that will provide adequate and stable funding for our children’s education.

Recognizing that students and parents pay more for tuition when the state allocates fewer dollars to public universities and colleges, Rebekah opposed the elimination of the Michigan Promise Scholarship during the 2009 budget negotiations. At the same time, she has offered immediate help to several families in the 53rd House District by creating the Envision Michigan Fund, which offers two to three scholarships per year to high school seniors who plan to pursue higher education. In an effort to encourage individuals, businesses, governmental entities, and charitable organizations to help with the rising cost of undergraduate tuition, Rebekah sponsored and passed into law a bill to allow donors who wish to make a charitable contribution to the Michigan Education Trust (MET) to receive the same tax deduction as those who purchase one contract for a specific child (Public Act 134 of 2009).

Rebekah also sponsored and shepherded through the Legislature measures to provide funding for Washtenaw Community College’s Technical and Industrial Building renovations (House Concurrent Resolution 27 of 2008), and for the University of Michigan’s Student Activities Building and Observatory Lodge renovations. (House Concurrent Resolution 37 and House Concurrent Resolution 61 of 2008).
