With Rebekah at the helm, MARAL Pro-Choice Michigan joined the Coalition for a Fair Michigan in 2004, organizing field efforts and educating voters to oppose the ban on same-sex marriage that has since threatened LGBT families’ access to health care benefits. Recognizing these inequities that persist in our state for the LGBT community, Rebekah has continued to be a stalwart advocate in Lansing, sponsoring legislation to add sexual orientation, gender identity and expression to the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, assuring that no one is denied housing or employment based on who they love.

Aware that LGBT children and teens are particularly vulnerable to the alarming increase in school bullying, Rebekah has also co-sponsored “Matt’s Safe School Law”, which requires our public schools to implement policies that prohibit such harassment and keep all of our children safe. In addition, she has worked closely with the Coalition for Adoption Rights Equality (C.A.R.E.) to sponsor legislation to enact “Second Parent Adoption,” so that all parents may be legally recognized under the law.

Finally, while in the Senate, Rebekah has adamantly opposed attempts to insert discriminatory amendments into the higher education budget, as well as legislation to reverse the Michigan Civil Service Commission’s (MCSC) policy offering domestic partnership benefits.
